FOUNDATIONS OF PERSONAL FITNESS
This course represents a new approach in physical education and the concept of personal fitness. The basic purpose of this course is to motivate students to strive for lifetime personal fitness with an emphasis on the health-related components of physical fitness. The knowledge and skills taught in this course include teaching students about the process of becoming fit as well as achieving some degree of fitness within the class. The concept of wellness, or striving to reach optimal level of health, is the corner stone of this course and is exemplified by one of the course objective, namely, having the students design their own personal fitness program .Credit: 0.5; A one-semester required course for Upper Division students. Fitness credit may also be earned through enrollment in Advanced Band/Athletics/Dance.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
An integral part of a total education, this course meets the needs of students and helps them to strive both individually and in groups. Fitness conditioning, aerobic conditioning, and skills in a series of specific sports and physical activities are explained, demonstrated, practiced, and utilized by the students. Knowledge of rules, strategies, and skill techniques are taught by lecture, demonstration, experience, and testing. The course aims at developing in students an appreciation for and a desire to continue physical activity throughout life. Students are required to dress out daily in the school's physical education uniform. Credit: 0.5 for Upper Division PE; 1.5 credits must be taken in grades 9-12 to fulfill the graduation requirement. Students may not earn more than 2.0 credits toward graduation in Physical Education.
HEALTH
This course presents various facets of maintaining personal and family well-being in such topics as physical growth, anatomy, family life and sex, nutrition, emergency care, first aid, major serious diseases, communicable diseases, and substance abuse. Credit: 0.5; A one-semester required course for students in grades 8-12.
DANCE CLASS
Students will receive instruction in a variety of dance styles: basic ballet, modern dance, and jazz. The course will emphasize dance terminology, technique, fitness and endurance. This course will focus on the components of fitness, including fitness training in the form of aerobic exercise. Technique training will be a necessary part of the course. Credit: 0.5; An elective course open to students in grades 9-12; Credit may be earned in P.E. or Fine Arts.
