The Learning Center at Saint Joseph Academy is a program that addresses the needs of those students who have been identified as having learning disabilities, have passed the Saint Joseph Academy entrance exam, and who also have the ability to meet the demands of a rigorous college preparatory education.
The identification must be done by the appropriate certified professionals in accordance with the guidelines set out by the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD), and then the necessary written documentation must be submitted to Saint Joseph Academy for review. Once it has been reviewed, a meeting will be called that will include the student, the representative. In this meeting the recommendations will be addressed, and a "Student Accommodation Plan" (SAP) will be drawn up. The SAP has those accommodations listed that are appropriate for a college preparatory academy that will not interfere with the integrity of the advanced degree status of the high school diploma offered by Saint Joseph Academy. Parents will also be made aware at this meeting that remediation-type services are not, and will not be offered. Besides, the SAP implementation services for SAP students that are offered within the Learning Center program are those that relate to organization, test, preparation, and planning.
Once a student has been accepted, identified and documented, the Learning Center will then monitor the student's progress through periodic meetings with the student, the student's teachers, and the student’s parents. The monitoring involves academic grade analysis, organization, student work compliance, and accommodation implementation to assure that the student is progressing with their studies to the best of their abilities.
